The hardware is a one-time cost. The monitoring plan is forever - and it's where these three brands really differ. This is a numbers-first comparison of SimpliSafe, Ring and Arlo monitoring in 2026: what you pay, what you lose if you don't, and whether the free tier is good enough for you.

The short version

  • SimpliSafe charges for *alarm* monitoring (dispatching help), not for basic camera clips as aggressively. Best if you want classic 24/7 alarm response.
  • Ring bundles cameras, doorbells and alarm into one Ring Home plan - cheap and broad, but you lose a lot without it, including local recording and cellular backup.
  • Arlo is camera-first; its plan unlocks smart alerts and cloud video, and without it the cameras are much less useful.

What each plan costs and unlocks

  • SimpliSafe Fast Protect - ~$21.99/mo. 24/7 professional monitoring, police/fire dispatch, and video verification. Self-monitoring (phone alerts) is free, but dispatch and recorded camera clips need the plan.
  • Ring Home (formerly Ring Protect) - from ~$10/mo, Pro ~$20/mo. Records all your Ring cameras and doorbells, enables 24/7 alarm monitoring, local video backup and cellular internet backup on the Alarm Pro. Without it you get live view and real-time alerts only - no saved history.
  • Arlo Secure - from $7.99/mo (one camera) or $17.99/mo (unlimited). Unlocks smart person/vehicle/package detection, cloud recording and activity zones. Without it, Arlo cameras give live view and motion alerts but won't save clips (unless you add a SmartHub for free local storage).

When free self-monitoring is genuinely enough

You can skip the monthly fee if all of these are true: you're usually reachable by phone, you mainly want deterrence and instant alerts, you don't need a monitoring center to dispatch police when you can't, and you're fine reviewing only live video (or you buy a system with free local storage). Plenty of people run this way for years.

When the plan is worth it

Pay for monitoring if you travel often, want professional dispatch when you can't respond, need the alarm to keep working during an internet or power outage (cellular backup is usually plan-gated), or want recorded video history to hand police after an incident. For a system where that matters, SimpliSafe and Ring both do 24/7 dispatch well.

The honest conclusion: no monitoring plan is mandatory to get real security value from any of these. Buy the hardware that fits your home first, run it free for a month, and only turn on monitoring once you know exactly which feature you're missing. Still choosing the hardware?
